Application Procedure
Anyone wishing to become a member of Somerset Volunteer Fire Department can obtain a membership application from any S.V.F.D. member at the station.
If you are considering joining S.V.F.D., we request that you read and carefully consider the following:
To be considered for membership the following application process applies:
- You must be at least 18 years of age for regular firefighter status, or 14 years of age for an Explorer firefighter status with parental or guardian approval and approval by the chief.
- Application must be dropped off in person.
- The application must be completed in its entirety.
- A police background check is required. No one with a felony record will be considered.
Joining S.V.F.D.
There are a variety of reasons that people become volunteer firefighters, but our main goal is to protect the lives and property of those we serve. At times this can mean placing one's personal safety in danger while rescuing others. There are many challenges in firefighting but there are many benefits as well, including providing a community service, fire prevention training, and social activities.
Responsibilities
As a member of the Somerset V.F.D. you will have certain responsibilities in order to help the department run.
Responsibilities include:
- Making Emergency calls
- Going to Training
- Participating in Fund raising (Boot Drives, Bar B Q's, and etc).
- Apparatus maintenance
- Firehouse maintenance
- Making Meetings
Application Procedure
Once your application has been handed in, Standerd guidelines require that it be accepted or denied if the application is accepted then the person is put on a probationary period for a period of 90 days. During this time the prospective member is strongly encouraged to participate in Traning held every Tuesday night from 7:00p.m. to 9:00p.m. (Note the Traning my last longer depending on the traning being held that night) The Station meeting is held the second Thursday of each month. Due to department guidelines, Voting is restricted to firefighters that have been voted in already; applicants are ineligible to vote but are strongly encouraged to attend these meetings.
After your application has been posted for thirty days, You will ether be accepted or denied. If you are accepted as a member, you will be told during one of the monthly meetings.
Probation
All new firefighters are on probationary status for at least 3 months after there aplication is excepted at a monthly meeting if the membership can request for probationary period to be extended. |
